  • Torque motors and DC servo motors for robotics applications.

More and more often we see pancake or flat brushless DC motors replacing torque motors in low speed robotic joint and rotary stage applications.

Torque motors are very low profile motors that typically have a hollow bore and a very high number of magnetic poles. They are supplied in kit form as a rotor and stator that can be built directly into the application, with the advantage of reducing the overall size of the machine. However, because of the larger diameter, machining tolerances and a larger air gap (typically 0.5 to 2mm so that the end user can facilitate installation), it is also one of the major disadvantages of torque motors. Just as the resistance of an electrical circuit is given in Ohms law the magnetic flux path from the torque motor’s permanent magnets incorporate this “resistive” air gap. Where Current is replaced by magnetic flux, voltage is replaced by magnetomotive force and resistance is therefore relative to permeability.

  • Low Voltage Brushless DC Servomotor (BLDC) with two gearheads

    Unusual motor combinations of 2012.

Brushless DC servomotor, gearhead and encoder combinations.

The term servomotor is often misinterpreted or misrepresented by manufacturers and design engineers alike. Servo is derived from the Latin servius (Slave) and as such a slave must have a master, otherwise it is free. In order to be an obedient slave it must be able to complete the commands and report to its master. Conversely, to be an effective master it must be able to listen to its slave in order to effectively issue new commands. This relationship forms a servomechanism.

Stand-alone, or as motor/gear combination, the drives stand out by high power, extremely low-noise and low-vibration operation, marginal heat generation and minimal size – welcome characteristics particularly in medical handheld power tools.

  • Revolutionary and robust – the MILE encoder.

maxon motor unveils the world’s smallest inductive encoder.

Small, robust and accurate, maxon motor’s inductive micro encoder is a milestone in encoder technology. Secure against the effects of EMC, dust or oil, it has a configurable index pulse and integrated commutation signals. And its diameter is just 6mm.

  • 1-Q-EC amplifier DEC Module 24/2

Compact speed controller for brushless DC servo motors with Hall Sensors.

The DEC Module 24/2, a digital 1-quadrant amplifier with speed controller for brushless DC servo motors with Hall Sensors up to 48 Watt.

  • Dynamic and precise: The perfect OEM drive solution

maxon motor launches new CANopen positioning module.

As an addition to the digital positioning controllers of the EPOS family, maxon motor now presents an OEM version. The miniaturised EPOS2 Module 36/2 is designed to control brushed DC servo motors as well as brushless DC servo motors. The well-priced plug-in module offers full motion control functionalities and suits single-axis and multiple-axis applications of miniature size. The EPOS2 Module 36/2 is the perfect drive solution for equipment designers.

  • GP 22 S and GP 32 S linear actuators

Modular DC Servo Motor, Planetary Gearhead and Actuator systems.

  • maxon brushless flat pancake gear motors with integrated electronics

Brushless DC motors, servo motors and gearmotors with in-built speed control units.

maxon motor is launching a range of small brushless DC motors with integrated motor control electronics. The range of servo motors features established motor drives EC 20 flat, EC 32 flat and EC 45 flat, but now they have in-built speed controllers, yet are almost the same size. The brushless DC motors available as standard are the 2 and 5-wire versions, with an operating range of 2 – 50 watts. The motor drives are suitable for use where there is minimal installation space, when long service life and constant speed are required at the same time as simple motor and gearmotor (gearbox) control operations.

  • 5 years: NASA Mars rovers keep on running and running and running …

The Spirit and Opportunity rovers have been making discoveries on the Red Planet since January 2004. Both are driven by 39 of maxon's small DC Motors.

  • Not only DC motors, but also Education.

maxon does not only produce DC motors for the Mars missions, but also publishes technical literature.
